Back in childhood, everything was made by hand — and more than that, we cooked using whatever we had at home. We didn’t run to the store several times a day like people do now, and stores back then didn’t have such a variety of products — definitely no ready-made meals or fancy desserts.
This cake could be described as pure chocolate bliss — quick and simple to make. The result is a wonderfully delicious, aromatic, and satisfying dessert that feels like a treat no matter the occasion.
Ingredients:
– 450 g (3 ½ cups) all-purpose flour
– 450 g (2 ¼ cups) sugar
– 1 tsp baking soda
– 10–20 g (½–1 tbsp) salt
– 50 g (½ cup) cocoa powder
– 400 ml (1 ⅔ cups) milk (or water if you don’t have milk)
– 150 ml (⅔ cup) vegetable oil
– 2 tbsp vinegar
– A pinch of vanilla or vanilla extract
Preparation:
Take a deep breath and set the mood for a successful bake. Gather all your ingredients so everything is ready to go.
Mix the sugar with the vanilla, then add the cocoa and flour. Pour in the milk and vegetable oil, and stir everything until smooth. Once it’s well mixed, add the baking soda. Then pour in the vinegar — this activates the soda — and stir again until fully combined.
Prepare a baking dish by lining it with parchment paper and pour the batter in. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake the cake for about 40 minutes. Every oven is different, so keep an eye on it as it bakes.
Once it’s done, take it out and decorate however you like. After all, what kind of chocolate miracle would it be without a coating of melted chocolate? Dust it with a little cocoa powder, and you can even spread a layer of jam on top. You can also slice it into layers and fill it with a cream made from cocoa and sour cream — or use whipped cream and powdered sugar instead.
There are lots of ways to elevate this cake — one of our favorites is layering it with canned cherries and cream. It turns out incredibly tasty!
At its core, this recipe is simple — but it can really surprise people, even at festive gatherings. In my family, we make this dessert often. And honestly? Everyone usually goes back for seconds.
