The Best Old-Fashioned Goulash Recipe — Just Like Grandma Used to Make! 🍲

If you’ve ever craved a dish that tastes like pure nostalgia, this classic goulash will take you straight back to grandma’s kitchen.
With its rich, savory flavors and simple ingredients, it’s the kind of meal that brings the whole family together around the table — no fancy tricks, just honest, heartwarming food.

This is one of my personal childhood favorites, and even today, I keep coming back to it whenever I need a comforting, satisfying dinner. Whether it’s a chilly evening or a family gathering, this goulash never fails to impress.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs ground beef (for a hearty, meaty base)
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup beef broth (for extra depth of flavor)
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional but highly recommended!)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Brown the beef:
In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until fully browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the aromatics:
Stir in the chopped onions and minced garlic. Cook for about 3–4 minutes, until the onions become soft and translucent.
  3. Build the flavor base:
Pour in the water and beef broth. Add the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and Italian seasoning. Stir well to combine.
  4. Season it right:
Season generously with salt and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  5. Add the pasta:
Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender.
  6. Finishing touches:
If you like, sprinkle in the shredded cheddar cheese and stir until melted and creamy. This step adds a deliciously rich twist!
  7. Garnish and serve:
Ladle the goulash into bowls, top with fresh parsley, and serve hot with a slice of crusty bread. Perfect comfort food!
