Authentic Turkish Bread – Soft, Fluffy, and Irresistible

Turkish bread, celebrated for its soft, fluffy interior and golden, slightly crisp crust, is a versatile staple in Turkish cuisine. Whether served alongside savory dips, used as a base for sandwiches, or enjoyed plain, its pillowy texture and subtle flavor make it irresistible. This recipe focuses on creating a simple yet authentic Turkish bread that is easy to make at home. With just a few basic ingredients and some patience for the dough to rise, you can recreate the comforting aroma and taste of freshly baked Turkish bread in your own kitchen.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

1. Mixing the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and active dry yeast.
  • Gradually add warm water and olive oil while stirring until a rough dough forms.

2. Kneading:

  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

3. First Rise:

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

4. Shaping the Dough:

  • Punch down the risen dough to release air bubbles.
  • Shape it into a round or oval loaf and place it on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.

5. Second Rise:

  • Cover the shaped dough again and let it rest for another 15-20 minutes to allow it to rise slightly.

6. Preheat the Oven:

  • While the dough rests, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).

7. Scoring and Topping:

  • Using a sharp knife, make shallow slashes on top to help the bread expand while baking.
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top for extra texture and flavor (optional).

8. Baking:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread turns golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.

9. Cooling and Serving:

  • Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
  • Enjoy it warm or at room temperature!

Tips & Variations:

✔️ Herbs & Spices: Add dried rosemary, thyme, or oregano to the flour for an herby flavor. Garlic powder can also enhance the taste.
✔️ Cheesy Delight: Mix shredded parmesan or cheddar into the dough for a richer, more indulgent bread.
✔️ Whole Wheat Option: Substitute part of the flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier texture.
✔️ Sweet Version: Add honey or cinnamon for a lightly sweet variation.
✔️ Alternative Toppings: Experiment with poppy seeds, flaxseeds, or a sprinkle of coarse sea salt for extra crunch.

Storage Instructions:

  • At Room Temperature: Wrap in plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing: Slice and freeze in a ziplock bag for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven or toast directly from frozen.

This homemade Turkish bread is incredibly easy to make, and its soft texture and delicate flavor make it perfect for any occasion. Whether enjoyed with dips, spreads, or just on its own, it’s a fantastic addition to any meal. Happy baking!
